OHRA RACK SYSTEMS FOR VEHICLE STORAGE ON 5 LEVELS

OHRA manufactures rack systems for vehicle storage generally composed of 3 or 4 levels. In Spain the first storage system with 5 storage levels has recently been installed.

There have been significant advances in the re-use and recycling of end-of-life vehicles in recent years. A new step now consists in considering each vehicle as an individual and unique element in the recycling process. One no longer searches the warehouse for a certain vehicle model from an unspecific year of manufacture – one looks for a specific vehicle which one knows is in storage and which meets the precise requirements of internal and external customers.

Today, every vehicle is located at a precisely determined site, making it quickly and easily accessible. With the rack system and a protocol compiled by the processor, the recycling workflow can be optimally run. Thus the information with which one can best meet the wishes of customers is available at all times.

Using the same criteria as those employed for the purchase of a new car or a spare part from a car dealer, it is possible to find exactly the part needed. Today, in approved recycling plants, one can offer customers the parts in stock which best meet their requirements. The frequently encountered problem that the right part is inaccessibly located behind other vehicles in the warehouse, so that the customer has to make do with another part that happens to be to hand, is now a thing of the past.

In many countries one began many years ago to use vehicle rack systems manufactured by specialist production plants which meet the comprehensive and rigorous standards. A statutory type plate, attached to the rack by the manufacturer, lists the technical features of the plant and the manufacturer’s data. These specifications are accessible at all times for the responsible authorities or insurance companies for inspections of every type. The last named also have access to the documentation confirming compliance with the standards and which are presented to the recycling plant by the manufacturer. In the case of outside storage in particular, racks whose statics are far from verified are frequently employed as wind or earthquake-prone areas are not factored in due to planning shortcomings.

Thanks to the installed rack systems the vehicles can be optimally stored and labelled. Access to all the vehicles is possible at any time by using the simple registration method. Furthermore, recurring processes as part of the cost-intensive work of re-sorting in order to gain access to other stored vehicles is reduced. This also makes itself felt in the fixed costs, which contribute significantly to the efficiency and competitiveness of the recycling plant.

In a number of recycling plants it is still accepted that concessions have to be made in terms of the number or completeness of parts which have reached the plant in perfect condition. Over the course of time the stored vehicles suffer damage or parts are lost so that they can no longer be used. Sheet metal parts or external accessories are often made unusable as a result of impacts or crushing.

With the deployment of a rack system every vehicle entering the recycling plant is allocated a specific location where it remains permanently. As a consequence, all elements are retained in their completion. If according to the database a door for model “A” is available, then one can be certain that it is in impeccable condition when it is needed. The environment will thank us and the legally proscribed quota for the recycling and re-use of end-of-life vehicles can be met. Furthermore, the economic consequences for the company will be extremely positive. It is no longer necessary to accept losses due to damaged or lost parts.

The latest generation of rack systems from OHRA being installed can be equipped with movable arms or cantilevers as the customer desires, so that potential impacts, which previously led to serious damage to the plant or the vehicle, now have no effect. The robust construction from hot-rolled steel profiles, and hot-dip galvanised models for outside use, guarantee a long life.

These racks meet the effective European standards and can be statically verified at any time.

In respect of the prevention of occupational hazards the common practice of stacking one vehicle on top of another is not meant, which amongst other things, raises the danger of falling vehicles. This risk can be eliminated by installing rack systems. Up to five vehicles (in some cases more) can thus be stored on a floor area the size of a single vehicle.

In summary, the installation of statically verifiable rack systems increases the orderliness, cleanliness, safety and efficiency of recycling plants. This impression is also conveyed to the customers, authorities and insurance agencies, which in turn has a positive effect on mutual relations.
