Moving 750 tonnes of wood at the touch of a button

To improve availability of goods and to create more space for a wider product range, Karl Pichler, a South Tyrolean wood wholesaler, have modernised their storage with a mobile rack system by OHRA. The new storage provides space for storing 130 lorry loads of wood panels. Each of the four double shelvings possesses a storage capacity of up to 750 tonnes – at a dead weight of 720 tonnes for the total racking system. The assembly of the racks on mobile wagons is particularly space-saving while access to the stored items is nonetheless fast and gentle on the products.

Karl Pichler serve the markets of South Tyrol, Trentino, and North Tyrol via four locations. Their product range comprises wood and wooden materials as much as wooden floors, terraces, and facade solutions. Hitherto, the goods were stored in fixed racks. But these did not provide sufficient space for the growing range of products. Furthermore, the inventory of the individual items was to be increased to ensure better availability of the goods.

Karl Pichler AG therefore decided to replace the old storage system with a fully automated mobile racking system by OHRA. Unlike with racking installations screwed onto the floor, this storage system only requires a single work step to reach any storage location. It only opens two shelving rows when the access to a storage location is required. Thus, Karl Pichler can do without non-productive rack aisles while still accessing goods quickly and gently.

OHRA equipped the storage with four cantilever shelvings assembled on mobile wagons; and at the front face of the storage, each one single-sided cantilever shelving is additionally installed – forming, so to say, a frame for the mobile racking system. Each of the mobile racks is 34 metres long and close to 11 metres high. To reach the required load capacities, each of the 35 shelving stands is built from 450 IPE profiles – the strongest profiles in the OHRA range: They enable a load capacity of 19.2 tonnes on 13 storage levels. In total, every mobile shelving row thus provides a storage capacity of 750 tonnes – at an empty weight of 720 tonnes for the total racking system. With the new racking system, Karl Pichler customers can now access a wider range of products at shorter waiting periods – on the same floor area of the previous storage.
