Tall order: Storage technology for warehouse system specialists
Kardex, one of the leading suppliers of intralogistics solutions for automated warehouse and material flow systems, invested around 930,000 euros in cantilever and pallet racking from OHRA for its new dispatch warehouse in Bellheim. The main requirements for the new racking were to make full use of the ceiling height of 12 metres and to integrate a sprinkler system into the rack construction. In addition, OHRA’s performance in terms of planning, delivery time and installation proved impressive and the entire project was completed in just nine months.
More space and high load-bearing capability
Investing in a new dispatch hall meant Kardex significantly increased it’s storage capacity. The company stores the components and assemblies for its intralogistics systems there before dispatching them to its customers. A total of nine OHRA cantilever racks with a length of up to 48 metres offer sufficient space on four storage levels for the 1,250- to 4,300-millimetre-long packages. Each cantilever can bear up to 1,250 kilograms, and each stand can take up to 3,750 kilograms per side. Using a sideloader means that Kardex was able to keep the aisles between the cantilever arms narrow, achieving high space utilisation. The cantilever racking is supplemented by a standard pallet rack and two double-depth pallet shelves, each with a shelf load of 2,400 kilograms. The double-depth shelves can accommodate packages that are 3.2 metres deep and weigh up to 1.5 tonnes.
Proven technology plus efficient project planning
The OHRA racking solutions were not new for Kardex – OHRA racks worth around 1.5 million euros have been reliably doing their job in the production area for years. But OHRA also impressed with the efficient planning and implementation of the current order-by using two installation teams, OHRA reduced the installation time for the extensive system to just 25 working days. This meant that Kardex was soon able to put the new dispatch warehouse into operation and benefit from the advantages of the system. The material flow has been optimised and the goods are quicker to access – the entire warehouse structure is now more space-saving and efficient than in the old warehouse.
